Elections

The Province requires municipalities in Alberta to hold an election every 4 years to determine the seven Councillors for each Division for the next 4 year period. Occasionally, a by-election may be needed during this term if a vacancy arises due to a resignation, death, or other circumstances that prevent a current Councillor from fulfilling their duties.

County Council is responsible for the growth, direction and sustainability of Mountain View County. Council directs administration in the delivery of services for residents including traffic enforcement, roads and public works maintenance, property assessments, agriculture services, land development, fire, police and emergency services, and recreational facilities.

Urban municipalities which form part of Mountain View County include the towns of Carstairs, Didsbury, Olds, and Sundre. Also included, is the Village of Cremona. All Urban Municipalities are responsible for the election of Councillors within their respective jurisdictions.

Mountain View County's Legislative Services Department is responsible for conducting all municipal elections and by-elections, in accordance with the requirements of the Local Authorities Election Act.

  1. When is Election Day?
Election day is Monday, October 20, 2025.

  2. How will I know where to vote?
Voting stations will be set up in each division of Mountain View County. To view our County Division Map, please visit our maps dropdown section. You may also download a copy, HERE.

  3. Can I vote in another division other than my own on Election Day?
No, on Election Day, you cannot. You can only vote in your division.
Voters elect 1 Councillor for each of the seven Divisions within Mountain View County.

  4. Why should I vote?
Every Canadian citizen has the right to vote. It is how Canadians choose which leaders represent them. Voting is a responsibility that all Canadians should exercise. Your community is shaped by the outcome of an election. Voting connects citizens with the political process and with each other. When you take part in an election and express your view, you make democracy work.

  5. What is the eligibility criteria for voters?
You are eligible to vote in the election if on Election Day you:
    • Are at least 18 years old.
    • Are a Canadian citizen.
    • Are a resident of the specific Division you are voting for within in Mountain View County on Election Day.
    • Are listed on the permanent electors register and/or make a statement in the prescribed form at the voting station.
    • Provide the necessary identification in accordance with the LAEA.

  6. What can I expect when I go to my voting station to vote?
When you arrive you will be asked for identification. Your address will be verified to ensure that you are at the correct voting station. You will advance through the signing in process. You will be given a ballot and shown to your voting compartment. After voting you will securely hand your ballot as instructed to a Deputy Returning Officer for immediate insertion into the ballot box.

  7. How do I know who is running in my division?
Check the Candidate Registry section of our website, above (direct link: Mountain View County - Elections). You may also see campaign advertisements in and around your area. Be sure to check out each candidate's website and/or social media channels to learn more about their platform, as they are responsible for all of their campaign efforts.

  8. Am I allowed to take time off work to vote?
Under the Local Authorities Elections Act you are entitled to three (3) consecutive hours to vote. Voting Stations are open from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Your regular work schedule may already allow for 3 consecutive hours during that time period. If your work day starts at noon, or ends by 5:00 pm, you have the three (3) hours required by legislation and therefore, are not entitled to additional time off. If your work schedule does not allow you this time you will need to speak with your employer to schedule three (3) hours to vote. Alternatively, you may vote at any of the advance voting dates that will be set up for convenience; or if eligible, you may request a Special Ballot from the Returning Officer.

  9. How are ballots counted?
When you vote your ballot will be inserted into a ballot box. Once the voting stations close, the Presiding Deputy Returning Officer (PDRO) of each voting station will unseal the ballot box and conduct the counting of the ballots that have been inserted to determine the vote outcome. The ballot box is then delivered to Mountain View County's Office.
