Mountain View County Council approved a contribution of $500,000 - five installments of $100,000 beginning in 2018 - to Olds College BEYOND Campaign for the Werklund Agriculture Institute.

The County's investment will be dedicated towards the Producer Mentor Program, of which production competitions are a major component. This aspect of the program will be named as the "Mountain View County Production Competition Program."

The contribution will help the College in reaching its matching component for a $16 million donation made by David Werklund and Susan Norman. Through the BEYOND campaign, Olds College has set out to raise $40 million to support world-class facilities, programming and partnerships that will create an enhanced student experience. The four main projects are the Werklund Agriculture Institute, the Animal Health Education Centre, The Hub: Integrated learning Commons, and the Community Wellness Campus.

Reeve Bruce Beattie said the relationship with Old College fits well with the County's commitment to support agriculture as an industry and the education component that supports ag endeavours.

"(This contribution) is affirmation of our Council’s commitment to the agriculture industry in all its forms in Mountain View County, and to the agricultural way of life within our communities. In Council’s strategic goals it is stated that Mountain View County will provide an environment in which traditional and new forms of agriculture along with innovative, value-added agricultural industry can thrive. This help achieve that goal."

Council approved the contribution on Wednesday, June 14 during its regular meeting. On June 15, the County was recognized by the College with a "Founder's" level of donation. This was done to recognize a lifetime giving total of $1 million by the County.

Funding for the $100,000 yearly contribution for the next five years will be funded from the previously unallocated revenues from land sales.
